DITW offer members the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves. Parents/carers understand that there is an element of risk undertaken by members, such as tree climbing. DITW staff monitor this and reduce risk through supervision and staffed areas of the woods.
DITW opportunities are designed to build on an individual’s innate motivation, positive attitudes and/or interests.
DITW uses tools and fires only where deemed appropriate to the members or project, and dependent on completion of a baseline risk assessment.
Any DITW experience follows a Risk–Benefit process managed jointly by the practitioner and member that is tailored to the developmental stage and ability of the member.
DITW is run by experienced practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
There is a high ratio of practitioner/adults to members.
Practitioners and adults regularly helping at DITW are subject to relevant checks into their suitability to have prolonged contact with children, young people and vulnerable people.
At least one practitioner on site needs to hold an up-to-date first aid qualification, which includes paediatric first aid.
DITW is backed by relevant working documents, which contain all the procedures required for running DITW and which establish the roles and responsibilities of staff and volunteers.
Individual risk assessments are undertaken for every DITW events.
DITW staff undertake training through the company.
